10 Feb Levi Stadium is the Real Winner of Super Bowl 50

One of America’s most watched sporting events occurred over the weekend as the Denver Broncos were named the best team in the National Football League. While the Broncos and Panthers battled it out for the title, the San Francisco 49ers, or more specifically, Levi’s Stadium, were the environmental champions that Sunday.

Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, is one of the greenest venues in professional sports. Opening in 2014, Levi’s Stadium is the first professional football stadium to open with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

When construction began, Levi’s Stadium wanted to place a strong emphasis on technological advances. One cool feature is the stadium-wide Wi-Fi availability. This comes in handy when you want to order up some food. Instead of having to wait in a long line, missing the game, you can now order your food off of an app and have it delivered to your seat. This ensures that you will never miss the action. (Unless you go to the bathroom. Sorry, there is no app for that just yet.)

Perhaps the best feature and advancement of Levi’s Stadium is the use of renewable energy. The stadium is housed with four solar installations. These installations include more than 1,150 solar panels and one solar terrace. The three pedestrian bridges that lead into the stadium are also lined with solar panels that power the area. The solar panels soak enough sun to power a season of San Francisco 49ers home games.

Currently, 10 professional football venues utilize solar power. During the 2015 season, those ten stadiums effectively produced a combined capacity of 8.5 MW of power. To put that in perspective, that’s enough energy to melt the cheese on 255,000 plates of delicious nachos and run the television set at 105,000 Super Bowl parties.

It is exciting to see major sports venues harnessing the power of the sun to run their facilities. Here in Las Vegas, the sun is shining over 85 percent of the year, making this the perfect place to utilize the sun’s rays.
